I do not take in nearly as much air breathing from my diaphragm as I would taking a chest breath. Does this sound right?

Yes and no. What I recommend you do is first take a big breath from you chest. Now that your chest is puffed out and expanded, keep your chest in that position and begin diaphragmatic breathing. If you use this technique you will find you can take very deep breaths with your diaphragm.
